Sciatica Relief: Sciatic Nerve Decompression by Muscle Release
This module teaches the release of the piriformis and surrounding deep hip muscles, which can compress the sciatic nerve and produce radiating leg pain.

Step 1
Understanding the Problem
Sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve: buttock, back of the thigh, calf, sometimes the foot. Disc problems get the blame, but far more often the nerve is being squeezed where it leaves the pelvis, between the greater sciatic notch and the piriformis muscle. When the piriformis and the deep hip rotators beneath it (obturators, gemelli, quadratus femoris) fatigue into spasm, they clamp down on the nerve. Releasology releases those muscles directly. The nerve is decompressed, and the pain down the leg has no reason to continue.
What this release relieves
- Sciatica and radiating leg pain. The shooting, burning or aching line from the buttock down the leg eases as pressure comes off the nerve, often noticeably within the session.
- Piriformis syndrome. Deep buttock pain that worsens with sitting is the classic sign of the piriformis in spasm over the nerve.
- Numbness, tingling and weakness in the leg or foot. A compressed nerve loses signal. Sensation and strength return as the compression is released.
- Tight hamstrings that never loosen. Hamstrings fed by an irritated sciatic nerve guard themselves. Many tight hamstrings release only after the piriformis does.
- Pain with sitting and driving. Sitting loads the very muscles that are compressing the nerve; once they release, sitting stops being the trigger.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from stretching the piriformis?
A muscle in true spasm resists a stretch. That is why the figure-four stretch helps for an hour and then the pain returns. Releasology releases the spasm at the muscle itself, so the stretch is no longer fighting a contraction.
Do I need an MRI first?
If you have significant weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain after a fall, see a physician first. For the common pattern (buttock pain that runs down the leg, worse with sitting) the muscle pattern can be assessed and released directly.
How quickly does sciatica respond?
Most clients feel the leg pain change in the first session. Recurrent sciatica usually needs a short series while the hip rotators learn to stay released, and the 12-step modality teaches self-release for maintenance.

The Clinical Problem

Sciatica is commonly described as pain originating from the lower spine and buttocks traveling down the leg.
There are 3 spinal nerve fibers, that exit the spinal cord to emerge from L3, 4 and 5. When the erector spinae, quadratus lumborum or even the latissimus dorsi muscles are in spasm, they can mildly compress these nerves, but not enough to cause sciatica as many health professionals imply. The truth is, the sciatic nerve does contain these fibers, but most of the sciatic nerve comes from its sacral nerve contributions that come from the anterior aspect of the sacral foramen. True sciatica is impingement of the entire sciatic nerve. This doesn't happen in the spine. Only between the greater sciatic notch and the piriformis can the entire nerve become trapped and squeezed. And, the piriformis, because of its path, is the only structure capable of doing this. Many would disagree, but getting confused about the difference between sciatica and piriformis syndrome is a smoke screen to push people in to a lumbar surgery or a lot of chiropractic - neither of which are capable of releasing these muscles. Only piriformis release techniques will resolve sciatica and they will resolve it all the way or the piriformis is still tight, so it needs more release work.

Why This Happens

The piriformis and deep rotators stabilize the hip and control rotation.
