Understanding the Problem

The serratus posterior inferior lies across the lower back of the rib cage, directly over the kidneys and the adrenal glands. It is one of the first muscles to tighten when the body perceives stress: the fight-or-flight signal contracts it, and if the signal keeps coming, the muscle loses its ability to release and enters a fixed spasm. Breathing is disrupted, the lower ribs stop moving, pressure sits over the adrenal region, and the stress response never fully switches off. Clients with this pattern describe lower thoracic pain, trouble falling or staying asleep, chronic fatigue, elevated stress, and weight settling at the belly. A client arrives complaining of persistent tension in the lower thoracic region, often describing pain near the bottom of the rib cage along the back.

They may also report difficulty sleeping, chronic fatigue, elevated stress levels, feelings of anxiety and depression. They may also be adding weight to their belly. 

Despite treatment of the lumbar region muscles, trying to sleep enough, attempts to exercise and use even very holllistic remedies, but these symptoms may persist.

 

In many cases the underlying cause lies in the serratus posterior inferior muscle, which connects the lower thoracic vertebrae to the lower ribs.

When this muscle enters spasm, it pulls the lower ribs downward and inward, reducing the natural space beneath the rib cage.

Directly beneath these ribs sit two vital organs: the kidneys and the adrenal glands.

 

When the serratus posterior inferior remains locked in contraction, it can create continuous mechanical compression over this region. This pressure may interfere with normal circulation and signaling associated with the adrenal glands.

The adrenal glands regulate the body’s stress response through hormones such as cortisol.

 

When this system becomes dysregulated, a cascade of symptoms may develop, including:

• difficulty falling or staying asleep
• elevated cortisol levels
• chronic fatigue
• anxiety and depression
• metabolic changes affecting fat distribution
