Groin Pain and Inner Thigh Tightness Relief: Obturator Nerve Decompression

This module teaches the release of muscles affecting the obturator nerve, which controls the adductor muscles of the inner thigh.

Modality 29 · Releases: Groin pain · Deep buttock pain · Discomfort sitting · Inner thigh tightness · Restricted hip movement · Pulling sensation into the knee

Step 1

Understanding the Problem

The obturator muscles sit deep in the pelvis, and the obturator nerve passes right beside them on its way to the inner thigh. When the obturators fatigue into spasm they compress the nerve directly, the adductor chain loses its signal, the inner thigh tightens to compensate, and a deep, persistent tension settles into the pelvis. Clients describe groin pain, a deep ache in the buttock that feels like a golf ball under the cheek, discomfort sitting, restricted hip movement and a pulling sensation down into the knee. Releasology decompresses the obturator nerve by releasing the muscles compressing it, so the adductor chain and the hip work normally again.

What this release relieves

  • Groin pain. Pain in the groin with no hernia and a normal hip scan is usually the obturator nerve under compression and the adductors guarding. Both release together.
  • Deep buttock pain and the golf-ball-under-the-cheek feeling. That spot is the obturator internus in spasm, and it eases as the muscle releases.
  • Discomfort sitting. Sitting loads the obturators directly. Once they release, sitting stops provoking the pelvis.
  • Inner thigh tightness. The adductors tighten to compensate for a nerve that is not signalling them properly. Free the nerve and the inner thigh lets go.
  • Restricted hip movement. The obturators are deep hip rotators; in spasm they limit rotation and abduction of the hip.
  • A pulling sensation into the knee. The obturator nerve sends a branch to the knee. Clients describe the pull down the inner thigh into the knee fading as the nerve is decompressed.

The obturator system sits deep within the pelvis and hip, forming a critical junction between:pelvic stabilityhip rotationinner thigh function

When the obturator muscles enter spasm:

👉 they compress the obturator nerve

👉 they disrupt function of the entire adductor chainThis creates a pattern where:

👉 the inner thigh cannot fully relax

👉 the hip becomes restricted

👉 deep pelvic tension persists

Frequently asked questions

Is groin pain a hernia or a muscle?

A hernia is a bulge that a physician can find on examination. Groin pain with a normal exam is most often the obturator pathway and adductors in spasm, and it responds to release.

How is this different from sciatica?

Sciatica (Modality 26) runs down the back of the leg from the piriformis compressing the sciatic nerve. Obturator compression produces groin, inner thigh and knee symptoms from the same deep hip region. The two are neighbours and are often released in the same session.

What does the release involve?

Precise hands-on work at the obturator muscles through the deep hip and the adductor attachments, done lying down. Royal explains exactly what the session involves before it begins.

Problem

Step 2
The Clinical Problem

Obturator nerve pathway (adductors) - Releasology Modality 29

Clients may report:

  • deep pain in the buttock

  • discomfort when sitting

  • inner thigh tightness

  • groin pain

  • restricted hip movement

  • pulling sensation into the knee

A very specific and common description:

👉 “It feels like a golf ball under my butt cheek”

This is a key indicator of:

👉 obturator involvement

Why

Step 3

Why This Happens

Obturator nerve pathway (adductors) - Releasology Modality 29

The obturator internus and externus form a deep muscular tunnel through which the obturator nerve passes.

When these muscles are in spasm:

👉 they compress the nerve directly

This leads to:

  • loss of signal to the adductors

  • compensatory tightening of the inner thigh

  • persistent dysfunction that does not resolve locally
