Calf Pain and Achilles Tension Relief: Superficial Calf Release
This module teaches the release of the gastrocnemius and soleus, which merge to form the Achilles tendon.

Step 1
Understanding the Problem
The gastrocnemius and soleus are the big muscles of the calf, and everything they do goes through one tendon: the Achilles. When they fatigue into spasm from running, standing, heels, climbing or a protective reflex after a strain, they pull on the Achilles continuously. The tendon loses its elasticity, the heel hurts on push-off, the back of the ankle stiffens, and the calf feels like a rock that stretching never softens. Releasology releases the superficial calf directly, so the tendon stops being pulled on and the ankle moves freely again.
What this release relieves
- Calf tightness and calf pain. The rock-hard calf that never lets go is gastrocnemius and soleus in spasm. It softens as they release.
- Achilles tension and pain at the heel or tendon when walking or pushing off. The tendon hurts because the muscles above it are pulling on it all day. Take the pull off and the tendon settles.
- Stiffness at the back of the ankle. A shortened calf will not let the ankle bend; the stiffness lifts as the muscles lengthen again.
- Weakness or pain rising onto the toes. A muscle in spasm cannot contract further, so it tests weak. Released, it works again.
- Stiffness lifting the toes and foot. The calf in spasm blocks the opposite movement; releasing it restores the full range of the ankle.
A client presents with:

Frequently asked questions
I stretch my calves every day and they are still tight. Why?
Because a muscle in spasm resists a stretch. Stretching pulls on the tendon, not the spasm, which is why the Achilles often ends up sore from stretching. Releasology releases the spasm at the muscle.
Is this Achilles tendinitis?
Achilles pain with a tight calf is nearly always the calf muscles in spasm pulling on the tendon; the tendon inflames because of the pull. Releasing the calf addresses the cause. A sudden pop or inability to push off needs a physician.
What about the deeper calf?
The tibialis posterior and the long toe flexors lie underneath the superficial calf and reach into the arch and toes (Modality 32). Deep calf pain, inner ankle pain and arch pain point there; both layers are often released together.

The Clinical Problem

A client presents with:

Why This Happens

The Achilles tendon is formed by two muscles:

gastrocnemius

soleus
When these muscles enter spasm:

This creates:

Historical Note
The Achilles tendon is named after Achilles, the warrior of Greek mythology, whose only vulnerable point was his heel.
