Chest Pressure, Costochondritis and Restricted Breathing: Sternal Decompression

Paso 1

Comprender el problema

The sternum is the central anchor of the front of the rib cage. Prolonged stress, shallow breathing and overactive accessory breathing muscles pull the muscles attached to the sternum and ribs into a spasm that does not let go. The chest feels held, the ribs stop expanding, breathing goes shallow, and the pressure across the front of the chest can be frightening enough to send people to the emergency room, where the heart is found to be fine. Releasology decompresses the sternum by releasing the muscles compressing it, so the rib cage opens and the chest can finally relax.

What this release relieves

  • Chest pressure and non-cardiac chest pain. Once the heart has been cleared, the pressure that remains is the muscles across the sternum and ribs in spasm. It releases when they do.
  • Costochondritis and pain where the ribs meet the breastbone. The rib-sternum joints are inflamed because muscles are pulling on them all day. Take the pull off and the joints settle.
  • Shallow, restricted breathing. A compressed rib cage cannot expand. Clients feel the breath widen into the chest as the sternum releases.
  • Tightness across the front of the rib cage and difficulty relaxing. The sense of being held in the chest is muscular guarding; it is one of the first things to change.
  • Fatigue and generalised weakness. Breathing against a compressed chest is exhausting; energy returns when it stops.
  • Sympathetic nerve irritation affecting the heart's rhythm. The sympathetic chain runs along the inside of the rib cage. Clients describe palpitations and a racing heart settling as the compression comes off; cardiac symptoms should always be evaluated by a physician first.

Frequently asked questions

My cardiac workup was normal but my chest still hurts. Why?

Because the pain is coming from the muscles and joints of the chest wall, not the heart. That is a common finding, and it is exactly what this release addresses.

How is this different from stretching the chest?

A stretch pulls against a muscle in spasm. Releasology releases the spasm at the muscle, so the rib cage opens without force.

Does this help with anxiety-type chest tightness?

Chest tightness under stress is the accessory breathing muscles and the sternal attachments in spasm. Releasing them changes the breathing pattern, and clients describe the sense of pressure lifting.

Paso 2
El problema clínico

Sternal and anterior rib cage muscles - Releasology Modality 08

Why

Paso 3

¿Por qué sucede esto?

Sternal and anterior rib cage muscles - Releasology Modality 08
